Cannibalism is a natural phenomenon occurring among the biological communities and is considered beneficial as it provides energy to survive in conditions of food scarcity. It has been frequently observed in the predatory ladybird beetles. Our study spotlights on the comparative development of two species of aphidophagous ladybirds viz., Coccinella transversalis and Cheilomenes sexmacaulata on aphids and frozen conspecific larvae. The results point out that larvae failed to survive on the frozen conspecific larvae resulting in total declination of the population while good population build up was obtained on aphids with shorter developmental duration.Keywords

This study investigated phytochemical content, antimicrobial and plasmid curing property of four extracts (viz. petroleum ether, ethanol, distilled water and acetone) by reflux extraction technique of leaves of Aloe vera and Ocimum sanctum. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of secondary metabolites were carried out. Agar well diffusion method was used for antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus and plasmid curing property of phytoextracts was carried out. The result revealed that the tested plant materials contained appreciable amounts of total alkaloids (16.00- 71.00 mg/gm leaves), total phenols (10.233-40.267 μg g-1 fw), total saponins (10.267-65.167 μg g-1 fw) zone of inhibition (0.00-12.33 mm) and plasmid curing property (81-84%). Generally higher extract yields, secondary metabolites, antimicrobial activity and plasmid curing property were obtained using ethanol as a solvents, as compared to the respective other solvents.Keywords

Wheat is a major cereal crop in many parts of the world and it is commonly known as king of cereals. Brassinosteroids (BRs) are growth-promoting natural products found at low levels in pollen, seeds, and young vegetative tissues throughout the plant kingdom. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of different combinations of Silicon (Si) and 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) on wheat varieties grown under 100 mM salt stress. The result showed that shoot length of plant increased with the application of EBL and Silicon and it was increased the maximum in salt tolerant varieties in comparison to non-tolerant. Whilst, reduction was observed in ischolar_main length along with the increasing concentration of EBL. The effect of different combinations of silicon and 24-epibrassinolidealso increased the germination percentage (%) in tolerant and non-tolerant wheat varieties.

India has an incredible affluent assortment of both flora and fauna. The fauna is extremely distinctive establishing the ecosystem steadiness in a drastic comportment. Ladybird beetles are cosmopolitan in distribution. They diminutive insects ranging in size from 1-10 mm, vibrantly clad with shades of red, yellow or orange with spots on their elytra, belonging to the order Coleoptera and family Coccinellidae. North India has an exceedingly loaded population of ladybird beetles together with both the herbaceous and aphidophagous species. They are elected as farmer's friends as they prey upon a number of insect pests like aphids, mealybugs, thrips other soft bodied insects and phytophagous mites. They are persuasive biocontrol agents and indispensable gears of integrated pest management. They have already been time-honored as successful biocontrol agents against coccids, diaspids and other pest infestations. Present work spotlights on the effect of density on cannibalism by different larval stages of the zigzag ladybird beetle, Cheilomenes sexmaculata.Keywords

Purpose: This study was aimed to evaluate the antiulcer potential of Cucumis melo var. momordica (Roxb.) Duthie&Fuller, fruits.
Methodology: Ethanol and pylorus ligation induced ulcer methods were used in rats for the study. The aqueous and ethanolic extracts (200 and 400 mg/kg body weight) were administered orally and effects on volume of gastric secretions, ulcer index, total and free acidity were evaluated.
Findings: A significant dose dependent reduction (P < 0.05) in the acid parameters like ulcer index, gastric volume, free and total acidity and elevation in pH were observed after treatment with 200 and 400 mg/kg extracts in Pylorus ligation and ethanol-induced ulcer models.This reduction in acid-secretary parameters and ulcer score suggesting that acid inhibition accelerates ulcer healing.
Conclusion: Based on our findings, we presume that the anti-secretary properties of both extracts were responsible for its anti-ulcer potency. These findings suggest the potential for use of Cucumis melo extract as an adjuvant in the treatment of gastric ulcer.
